Lomi Lomi (Hawaiian) Massage

Flowing sea at sunset

Hawaiian massage is a traditional Polynesian healing technique which has been developed by female shamans of this part of the world. Lomi Lomi have been passed through generations from the oldest women healers in the village to their students.

Lomi Lomi has been described as similar to a nurturing, slow flow wave given its hypnotic use of the hand, arm and elbow for the release of tension. The massage is performed with flowing motions that can feel like gentle waves moving all over the client’s body. The flowing forearm massage techniques save your hands and protect your body.

In the Hawaiian language, Lomi means “to knead, to rub or soothe; to work in and out with flow, like the waves of the ocean.”

It is also known as the ‘loving hands’ massage. This name helps to explain its principles – the massage works gently yet deeply into the muscles with continuous, flowing strokes, allowing the recipient to relax and give in to the nurturing touch.

One of the seven sacred principles at the core of the Hawaiian Lomi Lomi massage is ALOHA- To love is to be happy. (ALO-To connect with the presence of HA-Breath of life.

The free-flowing strokes that typify Lomi Lomi have many of the same benefits of traditional Swedish massage: improved circulation and immune response, increased range of motion and flexibility, improved posture, faster healing, slower heart rate and lower blood pressure.

Creating movement in the spine is a primary focus of Lomi Lomi massage. Some clients may even experience an unwinding similar to that occurring in myofascial release.

Lomi Lomi Massage differs from many other forms of massage, being not only a deeply therapeutic bodywork massage but also given with an awareness of energy and the intention to bring harmony and balance to the mind body and spirit.
